Just to round out:
This seens to be an other kind of AirPush named LeadBolt.
The app Addons Detector lists all addons on the phone. When AirPush or LeadBolt is on the (very long) list of apps for an app then this app is a source of notifications bar spamming.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was beginning to lose faith in finding a solution to my airpush-like but not airpush problem. I have been living with these daily ads for over a month, could not find help anywhere. So I just downloaded addon detector. It didnt find any Leadbolt apps but I uninstalled like three apps with less common ad services, quattro and Mobfox. I hope this fixes my problem. We shall see, soon enough.

Further to my last post...
I only have free apps on my phone, mainly because I am not going to pay such low amounts with my credit card (fees and charges are more than the cost of app) and now that I have discovered that my phone maybe compromised I certainly will not be using a CC to pay via my phone.
As for the apps which have the spam messages, yes they are in my start up menu, but I have disabled them and upon restarting my handset the app does not run in the background as before, so I can still use these free apps.
Oh and yes Traffic Jam did end up being one of the apps that went to my start menu.
